Danyelle — co-campaign manager: Danyelle works with students at the University of Michigan’s Ginsberg Center. Originally from Georgia, Danyelle moved to the area in 2014 and is proud to call Southeast Michigan home. She is excited about working with Desiraé, her campaign team, and Ypsi residents to build on the rich history to create a City that is stronger for all residents. Danyelle is passionate about justice-oriented community engagement, grassroots leadership, and breakfast foods.

Joe — co-campaign manager: Joe is a life-long Ypsilantian and a writing teacher and union organizer at Eastern Michigan University. Before that, he worked at the Ypsilanti Food Co-op for eight years. He has been active in progressive political movements since 2007. He lives near Prospect Park with his wife and two sons. He got involved with Desirae’s campaign because of his deep love for Ypsilanti and his desire to see the city become economically secure and deepen its commitment to equity, diversity, justice, and sustainability.

Darlene — treasurer: Darlene, originally from Cleveland, serves as the treasurer for the Desiraé Simmons for Ypsilanti campaign committee. She is also Desiraé, Brittany, and Demetrius’ mother. Darlene is retired and is a disabled veteran. She served in the United States Marine Corps, and therefore; is committed to senior citizens, veterans, and people with disabilities. Darlene volunteers with the Ypsi Gathering Space and participates in REDY meetings as an invested Ypsilanti Township resident. She and her husband José moved from Haverhill, Massachusetts to be close to her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. Darlene is proud to serve the Ypsilanti community alongside Desiraé.

Marcy — campaign designer: Marcy has been a resident of Ypsilanti for 13 years, and lives and runs her home based illustration business in Ward 3. Marcy has been facilitating connections between artists and residents in Ypsilanti since co-founding DIYpsi Indie Art Fair in 2010. She brings over ten years of experience designing for her own line of home goods as well as for personal, small business, campaign, and non-profit clients to the team. She is passionate about creating opportunities for political and economic empowerment through the arts.
